The train pulled out of the station, spewing smoke to the gray sky. Edith sat, somewhat nervously, with picnic basket and bags around her feet, not yet put away to overhead storage. Her brother had been late from the newsroom, dropping by the house to help her to the station with the things she was taking to Oregon. Frank’s in-laws had been at it again and things were tense at the boarding house. It’d seemed best for Edith to head out to be with her sister instead, and the wedding was to be at La Grande in Oregon in a few weeks.
