Frequently Asked Questions



A student at UC Irvine put this question to me pretty hard in a first class session a number of years ago. She was quite confrontational, ane she wasn't going to sit there another minute unless I could convince her that somehow she'd be a better person for having taken the units. There are lots of interesting questions involved.

To steam to the end of a career and just stop is to make a pretty hard shift. I'm in a "semi-retirement" phase, and it seems to be working well. I look forward to teaching that one quarter of the year, and I keep thinking about how I'll do it next time.

There are so many things that determine why one lives where they do. Of major importance, of course, is getting back and forth to work. When one isn't working, or is working less, choices open up. Until recently (2008), one could think about selling real estate and moving into something more suited to one's lifestyle. We wonder if such days will return!
